My mom's been telling me this place has great service and the best chicken livers she's ever eaten. Though I'm not a fan of chicken livers, I purchased a coupon on Living Social (paid $12 for $25 in food) when it was the daily deal and gave this place a try with my significant otter. They're easy to find and have a small parking lot in front. There's a smoker out front and the scent from this is mouth-watering. It wasn't too crowded on a Thursday evening. We were offered seating to the left of the entrance, or to the right with live music that evening. We opted for the latter and were sat in the bar area. The place has a nice atmosphere and is clean and everyone on staff we encountered was very friendly. Their specials were listed on a board at the entrance and the otter didn't know what to do because they had a meat loaf plate as a special (he LOVES meat loaf; I don't understand this at all) but he really wanted to try their BBQ. He opted for the BBQ, this time, and we split a plate for two which consisted of pulled pork and beef, ribs and chicken slathered in sauce. For our two sides, we ordered cole slaw and mac & cheese (I was torn between the latter and mashed potatoes and asked our server what she suggested and she said she really liked the mac & cheese - excellent recommendation!). The food came soon after we ordered. For me, the sides were the real star - the slaw was like my grandma's and the mac & cheese may be better than mine. The otter got a side of green beans which he liked. The pulled pork, ribs and beef were all fantastic - all had a nice smoky flavor and the rib meat fell off the bone; the chicken was dry. Their sauce is good, if you like it sweet (which I do). I will probably get a pulled pork sammich the next time I go 'cause I liked the pulled pork the best. Though the ribs were a close second. There were a couple of families in the room with us who had young children and everyone seemed to be cleaning their plate. They have a full bar and a nice variety of bottled beer choices. The singer provided nice music (singer-songwriter tunes) to enjoy as we ate. It's a bit of a drive but we don't have any good BBQ joints in Charleston so it's worth the trip.

Saw an episode of "BBQ Crawl" today that featured this restaurant. Since we were heading through Charleston I thought we would stop and get some BBQ. I was disappointed. We got the barnyard sampler for two and there was certainly a large quantity of food. But I found the chicken and pulled pork to be dry. The brisket was shredded instead of sliced, but that could just be my expectation of BBQ brisket. The ribs were good, but a little too fall off the bone for me. Everything had a layer of sauce on it that I could have done without. The sides of Mac and cheese, BBQ beans, and green beans were good. We had coconut cream pie for dessert and it was delicious. The kid got the chocolate cake cow patty - think chocolate cake dipped in funnel cake batter and fried. They didn't like it. In all it was not what I was hoping for in a BBQ restaurant. Maybe it's a BBQ culture difference. We are from NC and BBQ is different there. But, that pie sure was delicious

Full Service and Local I prefer locally own restaurants. Backyard BBQ is a safe bet if looking for a quick bite. With a full service bar, beer, wine, and wings it looks to be a good place to meet friends after a game or a group run. I got smoked pork, brisket, red skinned potato salad, and bbq beans. All tasty but not to best version I've had. People's opinion on BBQ is very subjective. You'll enjoy your food. I order a piece of graham cracker pie. I was expecting it to be topped in cream but it instead had meringue which I normally shy any from. It was the best I've had in a long time. If the brisket was sliced and not dry it would have been 4 stars.

For a BBQ place the worst thing on the menu is the BBQ. Corn Fritters are great, anything fried is pretty good. The Barnyard Dog is good too. Wait staff is top notch

This was our first visit to the Barnyard. We were definitely not impressed. I asked for white meat chicken, but all the chicken is pulled & mixed together. So I ordered pulled chicken. My daughter ordered the wings, and my granddaughter got a chicken sandwich. All the meats had some strange sauce on top of them, and were pretty much tasteless. The wings were so fatty that my daughter couldn't finish the first one. The waitress took them back and replaced them with boneless wings. The breading on the boneless wings had no taste, and that strange sauce was on them, too. The side dishes were very small, not worth the price, and, in some cases, of extremely cheap quality. The dish of corn my daughter ordered was practically colorless. We decided it must be generic canned corn. Our waitress was good, but it didn't make up for the horrible food. We will never go back to this restaurant.

Terrible. Food was way overpriced and wow, just downright terrible. Have been here twice and both times were not good.

Went here for an early dinner. Seated right away and ordered drinks, then appetizers and dinner. Appetizers were fried green tomatoes with lump crabmeat and cheese. The spicy aoli was very good. Also tried the corn fritters which were quite tasty. Both of us had ribs, which were tasty and not overly smoky, and they were fall-off-the-bone tender. The big disappointment- as others have noted- is the sauce, which is completely uninspired. It's not much more than tomato sauce with a splash of vinegar. No smoke, no heat, no flavor, no sweet. Rather than being served on the side, it's ladled on top. There are no other varieties of sauce. The ribs would have been better off without it. Not a totally bad place, but there are better options.

A big disappointment -- wish I'd read all the Yelp reviews first. Brisket was pulled, not sliced. Ribs overly-salted. All meat comes slathered in a nondescript sauce. Service was speedy but indifferent. My server should have been a caution: I asked if I should choose the smoked prime rib or the BBQ, and she said, "Well, I'm really a steak girl."

Food is not very good...The meat was dry and the sides were small...not worth the price

Why do they put that "whatever it is" red sauce on everything??? It's nasty and unnecessary!!!! Most folks will put their choice if BBQ sauces on their meats, so please do away with whatever this stuff is!!!!

Terrible! Everything was burnt and/or gross. The fried green tomatoes were extremely over priced even if they had been edible.

Ok here is my story and I am Sticking to it. I ordered the chicken liver dinner. ( I know BBQ joint, I already had their BBQ.. Not impressed.) I called in my order and the lady told me 15 minutes and it would be ready. Arrived at the rest. and I waited and waited. .. 45 minutes later and I finally complained. Their excuse was, sorry, the chicken livers were frozen. The owner I guess just brushed it off like I was suppose to be a happy customer. The price is a joke for what I waited for and received... I received 5 chicken livers and 2 very small sides for a WHOPPING $12.69. Plus I left a tip. I paid before I received the food. I will give this place a 3 rd chance and then I will review to the fullest......I really want to like this place... That is why I will try ONE MORE TIME....

Decent BBQ in WV. They know how to cook out here....good meat...wish they would lay off the sauce some..someone is doing a good job cooking...why ruin it with the sauce? especially since we have 4 sauces to choose from on the table. The 4 sauces on the table - Ketchup, mustard BBQ (everyone in my party agreed this was the best), North Carolina vinegar (not very good for this style), and some of the sweetest BBQ sauce I have ever tried (a little too sweet IMHO). The Beef Briscuit and Pulled pork both were served with the sweet sauce on them (will ask for No Sauce next time) both were good...pork was better. Ribs were fall off the bone good....real good...someone know how to cook these right....once again...will ask for no sauce next time. Did I say the sauce was too sweet. Definitely not the dry rub ribs you can get in Memphis or Mississippi. I tried several sides (fries, onion rings, baked beans, potato salad, homemade chips, and mac and cheese) all were excellent, but would probably not get the baked beans or homemade potato chips again. I also tried a fried snickers bar and bread pudding at dessert - Never had a fried snickers ...doubt I will again...but was interesting....I loved the bread pudding and would like to try some of their pies as they look incredible. Atmosphere was nice, laid back - rustic with a couple salt water aquariums...live music....smiling staff who were efficient and friendly. I think this might be the best place I have been to in Teays Valley to eat. But this sure ain't Memphis, TN Tennessee,,,,Tennessee...ain;t no place that I'ld rather be. But...since I'm here....this will do.

Visiting family in the area and came here for dinner. I ordered the smoked duo of pork and chicken with mac and cheese, green beans, and slaw. I thought the pork was better than the chicken. The chicken was a bit dry as was the mac and cheese. I don't really get the raves about the mac and cheese. Maybe I caught it on a bad night but I didn't care for it. Good green beans and the slaw was chopped fine the way it should be. Big stringy slaw should be outlawed. My aunt got the chicken livers which I sampled and were very good. Very little breading and bits of onions. Yum. Her red skinned potato salad was very good. I preferred that to the mac and cheese side for sure. The mustard BBQ sauce was my favorite of the sauce choices. The Carolina vinegar sauce didn't do it for me as I am a huge Eastern NC BBQ fan. NC BBQ with the vinegar based sauce is best on finely chopped pork and this pork is not chopped fine but still very good. I would definitely come back here and try to save room for dessert.

We were greeted promptly and seated within 2 minutes. Server came immediately and welcomed us and took drink orders. When we placed our order my wife asked for the potato salad. The server cautioned my wife that a few people had commented today that potatoes were undercooked. Our food came in a reasonable time. I ordered the smoked duo for $12.99. I had the choice of two meats and two sides with a corn fritter. I chose chicken and pulled pork along with collard greens and macaroni and cheese. The highlight was the meats. Both were full of flavor and juicy. Both meats would be better without the thick house sauce. The sides were just not anything i would ever eat. The collards were dressed with a spicy vinegar and the macaroni was cold, chewy, and not very cheesy. The black oil dripping corn fritter was criminal and became the subject of my kids joke writing ability. Server was nice and attentive throughout. This would be a great place to bulk order meat for a picnic / church outing. To many negatives to come back again

We went Sunday after church which may have been our first mistake. We got seated right away but at a table in the middle of a busy aisleway. People were constantly bumping into us. Took forever to get server's attention and then forever to get our drinks, forever to order, forever to get our food. And it was mediocre BBQ. Won't be heading back anytime soon.

We walked in and we weren't greeted at all. The management, at least I think, we're the people that sat us and try barely knew what they were doing. The food was subpar and we practically had to smother our pork in sauce to get some flavor. Our server didn't even introduce herself and wasn't very personable at all. This restaurant needs to get itself together and put out some quality food and service. This was my second visit and needless to say, I won't be back.

Not a bad restaurant- great reputation, always good service, just don't go during the last hour of business. All the BBQ is dry and tastes like its been under a heat lamp for about 12 hours. My wife had the brisket and I had the pork platter; Dry and bland. They really need to do something about the live music, too. I love live music, but the musicians need to be aware of the space they're in. It's a small room, and the lady's belting out Etta James into a microphone to 8 customers. I looked around, and everyone just looked annoyed by the volume. Truly, if they'd ditched the mics and just sang to the acoustic guitar, it would've been great. Overall, not a great experience, but I'll give it another shot during more peak hours.

I stumbled upon this BBQ place after reading a review from ForkYou: forkyou.wordpress.com/20… Their website lists them as in being in Teays Valley, but my GPS couldn't find it until I put Hurricane as the city. In terms of location, I completely passed by it and had to turn around. When you make a right onto Hospital Drive, it is to your immediate right next to "My Family Medical." It helps that they have a smoker in the front but the parking lot is tiny. Once inside, we were greeted and shown to our table. It was fairly busy and had a good turnaround. We put in our drink orders and were given menus. They are known for their smoked meats (ribs, chicken, and beef) and during the weekends they have smoked prime rib! Having never eaten smoked prime rib, I was really excited to try it. I ordered it medium rare and for my two sides got the mac and cheese and potato salad. My friend ordered a smoked chicken salad. Most of their entrees range under $10 except for some specials and ordering a full rack. My smoked prime rib was $16.99 and my friend's smoked chicken salad was $5.99 For our appetizer we got a basket of corn fritters ($1.99), which were immediately brought to us. It was a basket of about 7-8 pieces with a small container of butter. Points for speediness but the fritters were not hot and i felt that there was a bit too much dough and not enough corn. When our entrees came out, my sides were each in a small bowl. After taking the first bite of my prime rib, I was surprised by how delicious the smoky flavor permeated the meat and it was cooked to medium rare. HOWEVER, the meat was a bit chewy and it was a bit difficult to cut with my knife. Even though it was good, I can't get over how chewy it was and probably will not order it again. For my sides, I thought the mac n cheese was delicious! I'm a bit picky with my mac n cheese but thought the flavor was excellent. The potato salad was okay but didn't really stand out. I had a bite of my friend's chicken salad and thought it was a bit dry. I'm not sure how many waitresses was there, but it was fairly busy and our waitress did take the time to refill our water glasses and ask us how our food was. ForkYou had mentioned how delicious the bread pudding was so I looked at the dessert menu which is located right under appetizers. But my friend didn't even realize there was desserts until I mentioned it! They have Fried Oreos, Snickers, and Twinkies!!! I was elated!! Sadly they were out of the Snickers. But there out of the snickers so we ordered the oreos (.89/each) and twinkie (1.89/each). It arrived to us piping hot! I slightly burned my finers trying to pick up the twinkie so I sliced it in half and it was oozing creme. OMG... it brought back fond memories of the fair! Both were hot and delicious but I give the edge to my twinkie while my friend preferred the oreos. While we were waiting for our desserts, another waitress mentioned the specials as smoked trout and alligator bites!! We were really intrigued but thought it could wait for another day! We were given our receipts and you pay for it at the register. Talking with the cashier she mentioned about a dessert they will have where jelly roll cakes were sliced, battered, and deep fried! They would have red velvet, chocolate creme, and chocolate peanut butter! Even though the food slightly disappointed, the desserts were excellent and everyone really friendly! I will definitely come back to eat the desserts and am willing to give their ribs a chance!
